Felicity was very reluctant to accept James's proposal for she had feelings for Rafe. But the suitor, James Deerhurst, had a motive for wanting Felicity and that was to secure Forton Hall because without it he could lose his estate too which was legally tied with Forton Hall. When Felicity got a marriage proposal from her long-time suitor, Rafe was jealous. Deeper than those reasons, Rafe wanted Felicity and couldn't bear to see her go. This way the Felicity and May could stay longer and buy them time to look for a job. He decided to restore the place to sell it off on a higher pricer. But since the deed was done and was legal, she let Rafe take over the estate. Felicity couldn't imagine that her brother would just sell off their family's estate. There were also 2 occupants who claimed to own the estate: Felicity Harrington and her little sister May.

However he was swindled when he got to Forton Hall. He figured that he could sell the estate and use the money to fund him for his next travel. When Rafe returned back to London, he won an estate from one of his gambling partners. So he traveled to different countries to escape his father and brother's insistence that he manage one of the family's estates. Rafe Bancroft never wanted the responsibility that came down with his family name.
